Can you really lose weight by eating more fat??
I know this concept goes way beyond what common sense may be screaming at us but it’s true.
Our bodies and our brains need fat.
All of this non-fat, low-fat diet “wisdom” is actually doing more harm to our weight loss efforts and health than you realize.
Research now supports that we need as much as 50-70% fat in our diet to reach maximum energy, fat loss and brain power. The key is the type of fat. We’re not talking chips and ice cream here….
By replacing processed carbohydrates with healthy fats, your body will eventually achieve a fat burning mode you wouldn’t believe. These healthy fats include coconut oil, full-fat (not skim or low fat and raw if possible) cream, butter, yogurt, cheese and meat from grass-fed cows, raw almonds and other nuts, avocados, olives, olive oil, and eggs from pastured chickens. (FYI, eating egg whites only can be dangerous because it increases your chances of becoming deficient in Biotin – Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that helps you transform fat, protein and carbohydrates in your food to energy needed by the body.)
What most people don’t realize is that eating healthy fat actually promotes fat burn, curbs cravings for junk food, builds muscle faster and supplies your body with energy and essential nutrients.
I had a hard time believing these recommendations when I first read about them several years ago, but I decided to put them to the test.
I gave up added sugar, simple carbs and most grains and switched to the full fat, organic, pastured versions of the foods listed above and ate to my heart’s content.
It’s been about 5 years now and my cholesterol levels actually improved. I lost weight and more importantly, my body fat percentage has decreased and my energy and focus have increased. Granted, I take high quality vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and lots of probiotics and Vit-D3 on a daily basis for optimum health, but I was truly surprised to personally experience a significant loss in body fat only after switching to a diet lower in the supposedly healthy, low fat grains/dairy and much higher in healthy but commonly forbidden fats.
