Can you really lose weight by eating more fat??
Can you really lose weight by eating more fat??
I know this concept goes way beyond what common sense may be screaming at us but it’s true.
Our bodies and our brains need fat.
All of this non-fat, low-fat diet “wisdom” is actually doing more harm to our weight loss efforts and health than you realize.
Research now supports that we need as much as 50-70% fat in our diet to reach maximum energy, fat loss and brain power. The key is the type of fat. We’re not talking chips and ice cream here….
By replacing processed carbohydrates with healthy fats, your body will eventually achieve a fat burning mode you wouldn’t believe. These healthy fats include coconut oil, full-fat (not skim or low fat and raw if possible) cream, butter, yogurt, cheese and meat from grass-fed cows, raw almonds and other nuts, avocados, olives, olive oil, and eggs from pastured chickens. (FYI, eating egg whites only can be dangerous because it increases your chances of becoming deficient in Biotin – Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that helps you transform fat, protein and carbohydrates in your food to energy needed by the body.)
What most people don’t realize is that eating healthy fat actually promotes fat burn, curbs cravings for junk food, builds muscle faster and supplies your body with energy and essential nutrients.
I had a hard time believing these recommendations when I first read about them several years ago, but I decided to put them to the test.
I gave up added sugar, simple carbs and most grains and switched to the full fat, organic, pastured versions of the foods listed above and ate to my heart’s content.
It’s been about 5 years now and my cholesterol levels actually improved. I lost weight and more importantly, my body fat percentage has decreased and my energy and focus have increased. Granted, I take high quality vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and lots of probiotics and Vit-D3 on a daily basis for optimum health, but I was truly surprised to personally experience a significant loss in body fat only after switching to a diet lower in the supposedly healthy, low fat grains/dairy and much higher in healthy but commonly forbidden fats.

Are Babies Being Born Pre-Polluted?

Recognizing the dangers in low level exposure to harmful chemicals
(Click for Toxic Timebomb Video)
“Every day, consumers rely on household products that contain thousands of chemicals. The American public expects the federal government do all it can to ensure these chemicals are safe before they reach the market. We already have strong regulations for pesticides and pharmaceuticals—it’s common sense that we do the same for chemicals that end up in household items we use every day.” — Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)
“Please don’t tell me a pre-polluted baby is just fine.” — Julie Deardorf, Chicago Tribune, 2005
Important Warning from the EWG.org:
Why We Need The Kid-Safe Chemicals Act
The nation’s toxic chemical regulatory law, the Toxic Substances Control Act, is in drastic need of reform. Passed in 1976 and never amended since, TSCA is widely regarded as the weakest of all major environmental laws on the books today.
When passed, the Act declared safe some 62,000 chemicals already on the market, even though there were little or no data to support this policy. Since that time another 20,000 chemicals have been put into commerce in the United States, also with little or no data to support their safety.
The human race is now polluted with hundreds of industrial chemicals with little or no understanding of the consequences. Babies are born pre-polluted with as many as 300 industrial chemicals in their bodies when they enter the world. Testing by Environmental Working Group has identified 455 chemicals in people, and again, no one has any idea if these exposures are safe.
We are at a tipping point, where the pollution in people is increasingly associated with a range of serious diseases and conditions from childhood cancer, to autism, ADHD, learning deficits, infertility, and birth defects. Yet even as our knowledge about the link between chemical exposure and human disease grows, the government has almost no authority to protect people from even the most hazardous chemicals on the market.

The Vanishing Youth Nutrient
If you like this post, Retweet and Share on Facebook Here =======>>>
Absence of this in our diet is responsible for up to 96,000 premature deaths in this country annually! It is essential to our health – especially our brains. Unfortunately, many people are completely deficient and don’t even know it. Are you one of them??
Science writer Susan Allport unravels why the disappearance of omega-3s from our diet may be responsible for the epidemics of obesity, heart disease, cancer. Oh, and wrinkles, too.
The Vanishing Youth Nutrient – By Susan Allport
When Lisa Kepp* was 2 years old, she was diagnosed with a neurological condition. She had not said a word in her short life–and it wasn’t for want of trying. Lisa was so frustrated at not being able to form the words she clearly wanted to say that she flew into temper tantrums four or five times a day. The family was on pins and needles waiting for the next time the little girl would explode.
A pediatric neurologist diagnosed verbal apraxia, a speech disorder, and recommended that she receive intensive speech therapy. He suggested no other treatment. Lisa’s mother had heard, though, about studies linking omega-3 fatty acids to intelligence and healthy brains, and she thought she’d give them a try. She purchased a bottle of children’s DHA in liquid form and began putting half a teaspoon in her daughter’s orange juice every morning. Within a week, the young girl was babbling and her tantrums stopped. Amazed, her mother spoke to the doctors, but none of them would engage her, as she puts it, in a conversation about omega-3s. So Lisa continued speech therapy–and her omega-3s–for a year and will be starting preschool this fall with her peers.
A happy anecdote, to be sure. Ask any scientist, though, and he will admit that without testing, we can’t be certain that omega-3s fueled Lisa’s recovery. But he can point to a growing body of scientific literature that touts the benefits of omega-3 supplementation. Studies show that these special fatty acids accumulate in the brain and can aid children with learning disabilities, reduce violence in prison populations, and even improve everyday mood.
We can only obtain these fats through our diet. They are essential to the development of healthy brains and other metabolically active tissues. Indeed, research from the world’s top universities shows that these fats do much more than regulate our brains: They can also lower risk of heart disease, arthritis, and cancer. They even help fight wrinkles and may block fat-cell formation.
How could omega-3s possibly be this powerful? Scientists believe it’s because Americans are suffering from a widespread deficiency. A recent study conducted by Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health, found that the absence of these fatty acids in our diet is responsible annually for up to 96,000 premature deaths in this country. Scientists, however, are learning that fixing this nutritional deficiency is a bit more complicated than simply telling people to eat more fish….

Is Sugar Toxic?

Is Sugar Toxic?
Last Month, 60 Minutes released new research from some of America’s most respected institutions. The findings state that the amounts and kinds of sugar being consumed by Americans today is toxic. Not only is sugar toxic, but it is being blamed for the rising rates of disease in our country from obesity, diabetes and even heart disease.
It’s alarming when you realize how much sugar is actually in the foods we eat.
Sugar is added to many foods you would never suspect.
Our bodies were designed to get sugars from real foods like fruits which, because of the fiber and other nutrients, slow down it’s absorption so our bodies can process it more effectively.
Although it’s not very realistic in today’s world to eat absolutely no added sugar, it is very important to be educated so you can make the best choices to reduce the amount of sugar you eat and teach your kids to do the same.

Are You a Toxic Beauty?
Toxic Beauty News With Diane Sawyer
What’s the first thing you do each day?
You get up, maybe put on a pot of coffee or make the kids breakfast and then head into the bathroom to shower and get ready for the day, right?
Well, would you be surprised to find out that your daily routine may actually consist of putting dangerous concoctions of personal care and untested beauty products on your skin?
I just watched a video recap from ABC World News with Diane Sawyer (4/30/2012) that explained:
“The average woman uses, on average, 12 beauty and personal care products a day; thus exposing herself to over 120 chemicals (the ave man uses 6/day with 80 chemicals), most of which have never been tested for safety on humans…
Europe has banned 1200 of the common chemicals found in personal care products. The US? Only 10 of these chemicals have been banned…
Congress is pushing for a bill which would regulate cosmetics by requiring labeling of all ingredients and prohibiting chemicals linked to cancer or reproductive problems…
Cosmetic companies have already spent over $3½ MILLION lobbying against the bill…”
There are safe products out there so there’s no need for us to be using dangerous untested chemicals in our beauty products
Be an advocate for you and your family by choosing to shop from companies committed to manufacturing safer products without any harsh chemical ingredients. Your health may depend on it.

Spinach Smoothies – are you kidding??

Spinach Smoothies – are you kidding??
My dad and I were on a long overdue trip to Costco yesterday to pick some of our favorite bulk products. I was specifically going for those little organic chocolate milk cartons for my son’s lunch. He loves them but I refuse to pay the grocery store prices which are .50 more per serving than at Costco. I was also planning on stocking up on some deliciously fresh, organic berries and frozen fruit for smoothies.
On my way to the produce section, I noticed a growing crowd on the left. As I got closer, I saw that there was someone advertising for a Blendtec total blender. There were mounds of fruit on the table and I realized he was making smoothies! YUM!
There was some whispering going on and I suspected it was because he was not only adding fruit and ice but handfuls of fresh spinach as well! He continued to talk as he added ingredients, blended and poured the contents into little paper cups.
There was hesitation as the crowd waited to see who was going to try it first. I was excited to taste it so grabbed a cup and started sipping it down. It was delicious!! The texture was good and it was bursting with flavor. I remember thinking that my kids would love it.
At that moment, my dad walked up. I grabbed a cup and offered it to him saying, “try this…it’s a spinach smoothie.” He looked at me with “that look” and gave it a try. Doubt turned to surprise as he enjoyed the last few sips.
Before I walked away, I snapped a picture of the recipe and I thought I’d share it with you.
So here it is:
SPINACH SMOOTHIE
Handful of Grapes – preferably with skins and seeds
Apple or Apple Juice (1/4 c)
Fresh Spinach (1 cup)
Orange – peeled
Kiwi -peeled
Pineapple – core and all
Banana
Ginger (small amt of shavings to taste)
Agave Nectar (1 T or to taste)
Ice
Blend until desired consistency.
My personal standby is a fruit and yogurt smoothie.
I make it for myself and my kids for breakfast.
My Smoothie:
1 Cup Plain Goatmilk Yogurt
1 T Raw Honey
1 Cup Frozen Organic Berries (no sugar added)
My Kids’ Smoothie:
1 Cup Organic French Vanilla Yogurt
1 Cup Frozen Berries (no sugar added)
Note: These do take a pretty powerful blender so I recommend investing in a good one. I personally have the VitaMix and have used it regularly for the last few years. The Blendtec they were advertising at Costco looked really good too.
You can’t beat the powerful punch of the antioxidants and fiber you get when making your own fresh smoothies.
There are tons of great recipes out there and you can even make up your own!
Enjoy!
